Today was the first day without specific missions since we started 40 days ago. Many of us had back logs of work that we plugged away at. Brian Pease located the radio beacon (B1) on the surface that Jill and Paul set yesterday with the time delay. Brian reports that this beacon was the worst one he's had to locate because it was right under power lines and the thunderstorm created all kinds of interference. Nevertheless, Brian is sure that the surface point is within a meter and a half (in the horizontal direction) of the actual location underground.

Rain started in late morning, poured for a while, then tapered off as the day wore on. By the end of the day nearly 1" of rain fell. Based on the rain we've had on previous days, the visibility in A Tunnel will probably drop to around 20 meters (60 ft).

Among the other activities, Mark Meadows and John Zumrick went on rebreather dives and John did his practice ingress into the personnel transfer capsule. All divers must do a practice ingress before they can go on missions that require decompression in the chamber.

Rich Hudson and Glenn Daugaard went to Sally Ward and staged some emergency bottles for future operations there.

This Marks Products camera we have located in the entrance is used monitor the divers as they return from their missions and begin their decompression. Although there is no scale, the camera is approximately 1-1/2" in diameter [photo ©1999 Bob Killorin].
