Installation of one of the Marks Products cameras:

This photo shows a Marks Products "down hole" underwater video camera, less than 2 inches in diameter, including video lights. The camera is attached for transport to a 300 meter spool of cable used for real-time viewing [photo © 1998 Barbara Anne am Ende].

One of 3 Marks Products cameras was mounted to the Sippel Company frame that holds the PTC (personnel transfer capsule) [photo © 1998 Barbara Anne am Ende].

In this wider angle view of the habitat platform, the camera is mounted high on the frame, aimed at the transfer capsule [photo © 1998 Barbara Anne am Ende].

Inside Mission Control, the PTC can be viewed on a computer monitor. Here Tom Johnson watches the deck activity plus communicates by walkie-talkie. Soon there will be telephone connection to the floating platform [photo © 1998 Barbara Anne am Ende].

A second Marks Products camera was installed at the bottom of the spring pool, to monitor the point where the transfer capsule is lowered where divers enter at the end of their dives. Stay tuned for more pictures on upcoming daily updates.

Four radio location beacons were placed in Sally Ward Spring today by Paul Heinerth, Andrew Poole, and Gary Lemme (at left in the photo here). These were subsequently located on the surface by Mike Stevens and Brian Pease (in canoe). The first fix was a beacon at the Balcony (see Sally Ward map) and the rest were evenly spaced back out towards the entrance to the spring. The middle two positions ended up being underwater in the stream run and were marked with long survey stakes. We expect shortly to have precision GPS fixes for all of these. Jason Mallinson, Rick Stanton, and Matt Matthes performed another mission simulation today. The purpose was to work out minor glitches that became apparent in yesterday's simulation -- particularly in the bell ingress, gear stowing, and bell transfer procedures. Today, all was "spot on," and the Safety Review Board authorized the in-cave mission to the end of D-Tunnel tomorrow.

Today's humor picture: After the group picture, some of the team decided to give Patty Mortara, our cheerful support crew manager, a going away present--she's temporarily leaving the project and won't return until after New Years [photos © 1998 Barbara Anne am Ende].
